Privacy policy

To understand which pages are read and how often, this site uses Google Analytics (GA4), provided by Google LLC, through Google's Google Tag Manager. When you open a page, information such as the URL of the page, the page you came from, the time spent, the type of browser and operating system, the screen size, your approximate region and your IP address is sent to Google, through cookies and similar means.

This site is served by Cloudflare Pages from Cloudflare, Inc., and Cloudflare's Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views and how long pages take to load. It does not use cookies.

The information is used only to understand and improve how the site is used. Nothing that identifies you personally, such as your name or email address, is sent, and this site does not collect any.

If you would rather not send this information, you can turn off cookies in your browser or use the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. Either way you can still use the site as normal. For how Google handles the information, see the Google Privacy Policy.

To help cover running costs, this site uses Google AdSense, a third-party advertising service. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.

You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google's Ads Settings, and opt out of third-party vendors' cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info. For how Google uses information in advertising, see How Google uses cookies in advertising.

Whether ads are shown, and what they show, has no influence on the data on this site.

For visits from the EU (EEA), the United Kingdom and Switzerland, in light of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the ePrivacy Directive, no analytics are collected: the default of Google Consent Mode is set to “denied”, so the analytics tag does not run. No analytics cookies are stored and none of the information listed above is sent. Advertising cookies are also set to “denied” by the same default.

This site stores two things in your browser (local storage and session storage): whether readings (furigana) are shown on the Japanese pages, and where you were in the database page, so that you return to the same place after opening an emperor's page. They stay in your browser and are not sent to this site or anyone else.

If you email this site, your email address and message are used only to reply and to correct or improve the site. They are not passed to anyone else without your consent, except where required by law.

The feedback form at the bottom of the Japanese pages can be used without giving a name or email address. Messages are read only by the person who runs the site and are used to correct and improve it. IP addresses are not stored. Cloudflare Turnstile is used to block spam.

Apart from what is sent to Google and Cloudflare as described above, no information about visitors is passed to anyone else.
